A Dog Who Voted In Two California Elections

That dog was Maya, registered to vote by her human companion, Laura Lee Yourex, 62 of Orange County. Maya voted in the 2021 California governor recall election and the 2022 primary election.

Mail-in ballots were used to cast Maya's votes and she posed with an "I voted" sticker.

Her 2021 vote was successfully counted, but her 2022 ballot was rejected. Until recently, Maya was still receiving her mail-in ballots but due to passing away, was unable to vote them.

Ms. Yourex joyfully shared this adventure on social media, and after there was no response from authorities, later turned herself in. She faces possible prosecution for illegally casting votes and other charges.

Now, exclusive to this Fable, to assess the impact of a dog voting I interviewed Genovia University eminent political science professor, Dr. Ludwig Martini.

DK: What do you think of Maya voting?

Dr. Martini: I admire Maya. Many Californians don't vote at all.

DK: But how could she be knowledgeable of the candidates and the issues?

Dr. Martini: Easy! She did what many voters do, watched TV ads and then made up her mind.

DK: Will this boost voter turnouts?

Dr. Martini: Yes! Not among people, they are a lost cause. But among dogs, especially among those who are smart and want to control American politics. Golden Retrievers fit that category.

DK: Will dogs voting undermine the principles of our democracy? That it is all becoming a farce.

Dr. Martini: It already is a farce. The political craziness taking place. I salute Ms. Yourex and Maya for helping to call the voter part of this to our attention.

With Love To All - Dick
