Inspired by Rosa Parks’ 1955 refusal to give up her Birmingham, Alabama bus seat to a white person, and the yearlong bus boycott that followed, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which ultimately integrated the Birmingham buses, I knew I had to do something meaningful as well.
Now, before you read any further, please consider sometimes my aspirations fall far short of the greatness of others.
So, this weekend, I boarded a bus and refused to give up my seat to a pregnant woman. This could start a revolution in which pregnant women must give up their bus seats to fully abled men.
But somehow the result I anticipated was different. Instead of declaring me a hero, she smacked me with her handbag, and the driver threw me off of the bus.
If history will remember anything about this event, it will be that I had to wait for the next bus and buy another ticket, being careful there were no pregnant women on board.
