"Why me," Artie always complained. "I'm so tired of all the demands people make of me. Help me do this, help me do that. I resent people asking so much of me."
With that resentful attitude, no surprise, Artie had no special lady in his life, had no real friends and never got ahead at work. He was lonely and frustrated, and even his family avoided him.
"Why can't I find love and happiness," he said with heartache gripping his spirit.
Then one night as Artie laid in bed thinking about his sad life he heard a voice whisper, "Replace thoughts of resentment with gratitude and your life will be dramatically uplifted."
Artie looked around but he saw no-one.
After getting back in bed, he heard the words again, "Replace thoughts of resentment with gratitude and your life will be dramatically uplifted."
"Who are you," Artie shouted. But there was only silence in the room.
The next day at work, Artie decided to try it. When a co-worker asked for some help on a project, Artie caught himself before he could complain and he instead replied, "It would be my pleasure to assist you. We'll both learn something new from this work."
And they did.
"In return, I would be happy to help you, " the co-worker told Arie with a big smile.
This encouraged Artie to help others, while also always finding something in each project to be thankful for.
Soon Artie became one of the most popular people in his department and eventually he became one of the most popular people in the company, the guy people turned to for anything important.
After 10 years of going no-where in the company, within a year, one promotion followed the next.
Having become so popular and with a career on the rise, Artie indeed was grateful. It was a dream come true.
And among those Artie became popular with were many of the single ladies in the company, while others introduced him to their sisters and their female friends.
For the first time in his life, Artie had many women desiring to be with him.
One night as Artie laid in bed, he thought to himself, "What a fine line it is between failure and success," as he pondered those magical words that he realized were a little touch of heaven, "Replace thoughts of resentment with gratitude and your life will be dramatically uplifted."
"I don't know if you can hear me," he said to the voice that had whispered those magical words to him when he was down. "But thank you."
Just then he heard a whisper, "You're welcome. Your joy is mine, and the joy of all who know you."
