A Second Chance

Unable to find work, and in the process of being evicted from their tiny apartment, in desperation Joe stole some groceries from a supermarket to feed his wife and two small children.

But a supermarket employee saw the theft and called the police. A day later, Joe was arrested and charged with felony shoplifting, a charge that carried a 30-day jail sentence.

Joe was confronted by an unsympathetic judge, but just before the judge was to make his ruling, a man in the courtroom stood up.

“Joe didn’t do it,” said the stranger. “I did!”

“But how could this be,” exclaimed the judge. “It’s simple your honor,” the stranger replied. “They arrested the wrong man. I cannot allow him to pay for my crime.“

Based upon his confession, the stranger was convicted and did the time.

Meanwhile, with a second chance, and no criminal record, Joe suddenly got a job and paid his bills, ending his eviction, and now able to feed his family.

When the stranger was released from jail, Joe was there to greet him. “Who are you and why did you sacrifice yourself for me,” he asked in gratitude.

But the stranger didn’t answer. He simply smiled at Joe, and as he walked away, disappeared from sight.

It was as if a guardian angel had rescued Joe and his family and this time gave them much better lives.
