A library book originally checked out in February 1927, “A History of the United States,” by Benson Lossing was recently returned to a Napa County, CA library.
Missing for 96 years, the book ran up huge penalties.
Police identified the grandson of the thief, who had long possessed the book and should have returned it decades ago.
He was convicted and sent to jail. Ironically, while needing something to read, this book was loaned to him.
