As Sid laid in his death bed, he bemoaned not having achieved his dreams, and now it's too late.
The Angels listened and one told the others, “We hear this so often from dying people. It’s very sad, and we should do something about this.”
“I know what to do,” another Angel replied. “Let’s create an island paradise, and on that island, each person can briefly be whatever he or she wishes to be.”
“We’ll start by taking Sid from his death bed, and although it will appear physically that he is in that bed, we will transport him spiritually to this magical island.”
“Sid wished to be a corporate titan. We'll make him one and be the employees who serve his corporate edicts.”
And so it came to pass. Sid became that corporate titan, and had the time of his life. He then returned spiritually to his death bed and died a fulfilled man.
The Angels soon extended this blessing to others who were dying.
Some people became rock stars or movie stars, and a few became heads of state, while others became great athletes, or great artists or authors.
Still others made amends to their children, embodied by Angels, for the poor parents they had been. And others became children again, to live the childhood joy they never had.
Everyone attained his or her deepest wishes, before dying.
But then an interesting problem occurred. No-one wanted to leave the island. To them, this was heaven.
“Here’s what we’ll do,” said an Angel. “We’ll promise that at the end of their next lives, they can again briefly return to this magical place.”
But as the Angels looked at this peaceful island with its clear blue skies, white sand beaches and palm trees swaying in the breeze, none of them wanted to leave either.
For this was the magical place mankind had always wished for, a peaceful place where dreams do come true, even for Angels.
