With all the fear of new US tariffs triggering a global economic war, I spoke to famed economics professor, Dr. Willis Blunderfield to get his perspective.
“Dr. Blunderfield, do you think these US tariffs could trigger tariffs from all over the world against US goods?”
“Of course not,“ he replied. “Everyone will complain, threaten and then adjust to these new tariffs.”
“And if they don’t,” I asked.
“They have no choice, Dr. Blunderfield replied. “The US is in debt to almost every major nation in the world. If they don’t cooperate the US can’t pay its bills.“
“And if the US can’t pay its bills,“ Dr. Blunderfield continued, “It means the US will default on the money it owes others and they will go broke.”
“Therefore it is a mutual annihilation pact in which nations have no choice but to cooperate with each other, and find a solution.”
“That is very comforting,” I replied. “It means no matter how badly the US screws up, everyone we borrowed money from has to work with us to get paid.”
“True,” said Dr. Blunderfield. “It is amazing how the US’s financial irresponsibility causes that to happen.”
