In the news, approximately 2 million dimes, or about $200,000, was taken from a tractor trailer in a parking lot of the Philadelphia Mills shopping mall complex in north-east Philadelphia on Thursday morning.
Seeing a great story, I approached one of the robbers:
“How are you going to spend that money,” I asked. “Whenever you buy something, people are going to be suspicious when you pay them in dimes, especially if you buy a car.”
“I don’t know,” the robber replied. “May be I could take the dimes to the bank and trade them for bigger currency.”
“If you do,” I replied, “They will be suspicious with this dime theft in the news, and you dragging in bags filled with dimes.”
“Maybe I could say I bought them from vending machine owners,” answered the robber.
“Sounds good,” I answered, “Except vending machines take quarters.”
Frustrated, the robber screamed, “I don’t want to go to prison!”
“I don’t want you to,” I answered. “But perhaps there is some good news here. Because dimes have so little value anymore, maybe it is no longer against the law to steal them. Just give them back."
Last night, the robber returned the dimes, and was heard yelling, “Who knew dimes would be worthless?”
