"I love to offer a helping hand to those people who are down on their luck," Tom told his Guardian Angel.
"That's wonderful Tom," replied the Angel. "This world needs more people like you."
"But so your generosity won't burn out, please keep these two thoughts in mind:
"First, give with no expectation of anything in return. You may never be paid back, or even hear a thank you. Their unexpressed gratitude doesn't reduce the value of your helping hand."
"That people are down on their luck can hurt their pride and cause resentment for themselves and sometimes for those who help them."
"Second, enjoy the heartfelt reward of knowing your generosity made a beneficial difference in the life of another."
"For what your generosity really is, is an expression of love, and a helping hand of hope, as in someone's darkness you become their beacon of light."
