A group of gold miners were working in a distant goldfield when one of them made an amazing discovery.
He discovered the mother load, the greatest amount of gold ever found in one location. "I'm rich," he proclaimed to the other miners, as he happily danced a little celebratory jig.
"Goodbye to all of you wretched people."
"But we should all share in this gold," they proclaimed. "For this find is part of the same goldfield!"
"Over my dead body," screamed the first miner, as he pulled out a gun and aimed it at the group of miners."
"I'll call the sheriff," said one of the miners. "He'll decide who is entitled to what."
About an hour later when the sheriff arrived, he found the whole group of miners angrily pointing guns at each other and making threats.
"What's the matter with you guys," he hollered. "This gold is of no good to any of you who dies for it, nor to any of you who goes to prison over it.
"And besides that," the sheriff added, "Apparently none of you heard that last year someone invented artificial gold, gold that is as good as the real thing."
"As a result, gold no longer has much value. You guys would have killed each other over nothing."
The moral: Life itself is the only real value, but greed can fool us into thinking otherwise.
With Love To All ~ Dick
Note: The concept of this Fable was taken from a long ago episode of the TV show, "The Twilight Zone."
